Infinite dots
A design inspired by art of Yayoi Kusama, but technically is similar to our color blindness test test design technique. Here’s a design where the same dotted pattern is used as a PowerClip container of a variable image field and the text frame contains that same image.

Before you start
/
- Create the pattern for your template or download the one used in the color blindness design technique.
- Import the image you will use as a pattern fill and turn it into a variable image field.
- Input the dummy text, assign an outline to it and turn it into a variable web-to-print field.
/
/
In a nutshell, we’re going to use the pattern shape as a PowerClip container for a variable image placeholder. The same placeholder will be PowerClip’d inside a variable web-to-print text frame.
Pattern fill
Duplicate the image placeholder and place one copy inside the pattern shape as a PowerClip (Effects/PowerClip/Place Inside Container)..
/
/
/
The result should be similar to this.
Text fill
/
/
Place the other copy of the image placeholder inside the dummy text and assign a No Fill to the text frame itself leaving just the outline.
/
/
/
Note. After placing the image placeholder inside the text object, right click on the text frame, go to edit contents, click on the image and press “P” on the keyboard to center it on the page. This will ensure a correct alignment of the text fill and the pattern fill.

The result should be similar to this.
All done!
Our web-to-print software can handle this effect easily! Upload the template into your catalog and test it.
