Lists of values

04/09/2008

Users can be restricted to what they can enter in the text fields via lists of values or datasets.

Web-to-print lists of values

/

Lists of values are expected to be reasonably short (less than 50 items) and show as a drop-down control on the preview page.

/

Lists consisting of 2 values, one of them an empty line show as a check-box.

/

Very long lists are inconvenient to users as they need to look through a long list. Use datasets if you need long lists or multiline input.

Setting up list of values

/

Lists of values can be entered either on the preview page in Field editor (click on the field name) or on Fileds page under Template Fields tab.

Enter the values one per line separating them with Enter. It doesn’t matter if the text wraps on a new line.

You can have as many empty lines as you want, but the drop-down will show only one. Selecting an empty line in the dropdown is the same as leaving the field blank. / / / /

Use datasets if your values are multiline. E.g. you may want users to select the entire multiline address as one field value.

Checkbox vs. dropdown

Lists of values are displayed as dropdowns except when there are only 2 values and one of them is an empty line.

Dropdown example:

  • Value 1
  • Value 2
  • Value 3

Checkbox example:

  • Value 1
  • /

Combo-box

This feature is only available in our Magento web-to-print interface.

web-to-print combobox

A combo-box combines free text input with a dropdown. The user can enter anything or choose from a list within the same control.

Enter a hyphen (-) as one of the values to enable it:

  • Value 1
  • Value 2
  • Value 3
