Repetitive text: open width

07/10/2008

It is not always possible to create web-to-print layouts for all possible lengths of text.  A simple workaround is to make the design flexible so that the text is only constrained on one side and it’s length does not effect other elements.

Web-to-print add page frameStart by adding a page frame (Layout/Page Setup/Add Page Frame). This will create a rectangular shape with the exact same size as the paper size of your template and place it as a bottom layer.

/

Input the dummy text that will show on the template’s previews and rename the object inside Object manager (Window/Dockers/Object Manager) to make them variable fields.

Note. The reason for renaming the object now is so you won’t have to rename each object later since all the objects will have the same name which will instruct the system to create only one input field for all the texts.

Web-to-print horizontal alignment/

Assign right alignment to the text.

Web-to-print rotate by 90 degrees/

Duplicate the text and rotate the copy by 90 degrees.

Duplicate the texts and play around with the font size on each duplicated pair of objects. Remeber to place them in a way so that the last letter of the word is free and does not affect other objects.

After you’ve finished with the layout, select all the texts, go to Effects/PowerClip/Place Inside Container and click somewhere inside the page frame.

The page background is now a PowerClip container that holds all the text objects inside it. The template size will not change after the user inputs larger texts.

All done!

Upload the template in your catalog and test it. Since all the text objects have the same object name, you should only see one input field.

Web-to-print lower case lettersNote. Since most fonts have parts of their lower case letters going lower than the rest, open the Field editor and change the letter’s case to Upper.

/

The text that you enter in the input field will replace the dummy text and keep the font size and rotation angle of each text object.
