Self-registration is a good choice when you want to hide the web to print catalog from the majority of the public, but keep it open to a certain segment of people. E.g. a web to print catalog is available to members of an online community.

Catalogs with access by self-registration have a specially crafted link that is unique to the catalog and cannot be guessed by an outsider. The link shows on catalog details page. Make the link available where you want users to come from. E.g. post it on an online community page. Anyone clicking on the link can register and be given access to the catalog. You  get a notification about a new user, but do not need to take any actions.

There is a risk the link can be disclosed outside the intended audience and you may get unwanted users. Use corporate access if you need absolute control over the access to your web-to-print software.
