Variable shape colors

27/07/2009

Any vector shape in a web-to-print template can be made a variable color field. A color picker will be showing against the field for users to change the color. To turn a shape’s color into a variable field you simply need to rename the shape inside the Object Manager.

Select a shape and change its object name inside the Object Manager (Window/Dockers/Object Manager) just like you do with variable text or image web-to-print fields. Repeat this for all the shapes you want to have variable colors.

Oncce the web-to-print template is uploaded into a catalog the system detects the shapes that you renamed and automatically assigns a color picker control to them.

Web-to-print users can now change the shape’s colors.

This can also be achieved with variable web-to-print image fields but:

  • it will require more effort to create it because the image placeholders need to be PowerClip’d inside a shape since they don’t retain their transparency;
  • the system will take more time to process an image placeholder than it will take to process a vector shape.

Using shapes is preferred if all you need is a color picker.
