Wood inlay text

23/12/2008

A web-to-print effect for a carpenter’s business card using wood grain textures. The web-to-print text takes appearance as it was cut of thin veneer and inserted as inlets into a board. Very crafty.

Web-to-print wood inlay text

Before you start

  • Add a page frame (Layout/Page Setup/Add Page Frame). This will create a rectangular shape with the exact same size as the paper size of your template and place it as a bottom layer.
  • Create two artistic text frames and turn them into a variable web-to-print field. These text fields will show up as two input fields in the input form after you upload the template in your web-to-print catalog.

Photoshop texture

Lets create a wood grain texture using Adobe Photoshop.

Web-to-print fill page/

Create a new document with the same size as the page size of your web-to-print template, draw a rectangle that covers the whole area and fill it with a light brown color. The size is relative to the desired resolution of the design.

/

Web-to-print add noise/

Rasterize the layer (Right click/Rasterize Layer), go to Filter/Noise/Add Noise and add a small (Ex. 8%) Gaussian Monochromatic noise.

The result should be similar to this.

/

Web-to-print motion blur/

Next, add a motion blur filter (Filter/Blur/MotionBlur).

The result should be similar to this.

/

/

Web-to-print blending mode/

Duplicate the layer (Ctrl+J), set the layer’s blending mode to Soft Light and adjust its opacity.

Web-to-print Photoshop poster edges filter/

Select the top layer and go to Filter/Artistic/Poster Edges.

The result should be similar to this.

/

/

A real wood texture has knots in it. To achieve the same effect we will use the Liqufy effect (Filter/Liquify).

Web-to-print Photoshop twirl tool/

/

Use the Twirl Clockwise Tool (C) to add a few random knots to the texture.

The result should be similar to this. Save it as a .jpg image.

/

/

/

Note. Use the saved .jpg image to create another, darker version of the texture by adjusting the  Color Balance or Brightness/Contrast values found under the Image menu.

We’re done with creating the wood grain texture in Photoshop and it’s time to import the images inside CorelDRAW.

Diagonal split

Lets create a diagonal split on our web-to-print template. Duplicate the background shape and convert the copy to curves.

Web-to-print delete node/

With the Shape Tool (F10), select one of the corner nodes (Ex. The top left one) and delete it.

/

Web-to-print diagonal split/

/

You end up with the shape cut in half diagonally.

/

/

Web-to-print diagonal textures inside object manager/

/

Place one of the textures inside the original background shape and the other in the copied diagonal background shape as PowerClips.

The result should be similar to this.

/

/

Now lets ad that diagonal line on top of the border between the two textures.

Web-to-print pen tool/

Use the Pen tool to draw a line connecting the two corners.

Assign a small 1pt white outline to it from the Outline tab in the Object Properties docker (Alt+Enter).

Web-to-print diagonal line/

/

The result should be similar to this.

Dummy text

Web-to-print rotate texts/

/

Select the dummy texts and rotate them so that they are parallel to the background’s diagonal line (In this case by 30 degrees).

/

Web-to-print place inside container/

/

/

Import the same two textures that you used for the background and place them inside the dummy texts as PowerClips.

/

/

Note. In order for the grains and knots on the text texture to align perfectly with the same ones on the background texture, you need to position them exactly on top of each other. You can do that by simply centering each texture on the page (press P on the keyboard) or by setting the same position coordinates to all of them.

Realistic look

You may want to add a few imperfections to give your web-to-print design a more realistic look, depending on the intentions.

For example if the text was cut and inletted into the board then the grain of the wood won’t match. A bit of shift or different rotation of the wooden texture inside the texts will do the trick.

On the other hand, if the text was meant to be created using a wood die then the grain should match as it is in our web-to-print template.

Thanx pshero.com for this great design idea.
